When did you start Jessica Stanley Design? What all does Jessica Stanley Design entail?
I'm combining these first two because my explanation goes hand in hand :)
I started Jessica Stanley Design as a freelance design business when a former colleague switched jobs and needed a freelancer for North Carolina Dance Theater and it has grown from there. As a designer, my friends would look to me when they were hosting showers, or getting married for invitations, custom koozies, and all sorts of things, so my brand has really started moving in that direction. I am still going to do freelance under the parent company I started, Jessica Stanley Design, but I've started working on a line of invitations that I am hoping to launch this summer called J. Leigh. With the new website, brides will be able to choose from pre-designed stationery suites with save the dates, invitations and response sets, information cards, place cards, escort cards, thank you notes, and programs or work with me one on one to create a custom look for all of the weddings printed goods! I'm really excited about it and I will keep you updated on the launch!
How did you become interested in designing wedding invitations?
As a graphic designer in my mid to late 20's, my friends started getting married left and right and they looked to me to help with making custom invitations for the big day and any showers they were hosting for friends. I just fell in love. Then I got engaged and designing my own invitation really sealed the deal! I want to provide brides with invites that bridge tradition with modern details and a little bit of fun.
What is an average day like in your job?
Oh my gosh that's a hard one. I work from home so I've been really working on my work/life balance a lot. I usually wake up when my husband is heading out the door (he's a much earlier riser than I am) and my dog is laying on my stomach staring at me. That's usually followed by taking her out to play for a bit, making something quick to eat and then heading into my office to look at my to do list and check emails for incoming projects or edits and then I start working. Then I could be doing anything from working on the new brand, picking up a brides invitations from the printer, working on freelance projects, taking the dog out, doing accounting stuff - the necessary evil, or starting a load of laundry. It all depends on the day, but I love the flexibility I have being a small business run in my own home.
What fires you up?
Spending time with my husband and our friends and family, cookouts, college football, and creating beautiful things for gracious brides that will make them over-the-moon happy and excited about their big day!
What is your favorite font? :)
That's like choosing a favorite child... impossible! I am drawn to fonts with clean lines for some projects and right now I'm also loving all of the handwritten and calligraphy styled looks that are out there.
